Lead and its isotopes in the sediment of three sites on the Lebanese coast: Identification of contamination sources and mobility ArchiMer
Abi Ghanem, Carine; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Bermond, A.; Nakhle, K.; Khalaf, G.; Borschneck, D.; Cossa, Daniel.
Lead concentrations and isotopic composition of sediment samples collected from three sites within the Lebanese coastal zones were measured: at Akkar, Dora and Selaata. Akkar is located far from any direct source of contamination, while Dora and Selaata receive urban and industrial wastes, respectively. Low Pb concentrations (6-16 mu g g(-1)) were detected in the Akkar sediments, and high concentrations of Pb (70-101 mu g g(-1)) were detected in the Dora sediments. Measuring stable isotope ratios of Pb makes it possible to identify the principal sources of Pb in the Akkar sediments as Pb emitted from gasoline combustion and Pb originating from natural sources. On the other hand, Pb stable isotopic ratios in Dora sediments indicate that they are more highly...

Mercury Distribution and Methylmercury Mobility in the Sediments of Three Sites on the Lebanese Coast, Eastern Mediterranean ArchiMer
Abi-ghanem, Carine; Nakhle, Khaled; Khalaf, Gaby; Cossa, Daniel.
Mercury (Hg) contamination in coastal sediments has been widely studied in clay deposits; however, equivalent results on carbonated sediments are scarce. This article aims to study Hg distribution in Lebanese carbonate coastal marine sediments (Eastern Mediterranean) in order to characterize their contamination level and to explore the postdepositional mobility of methylmercury (MeHg) in the deposits. Vertical distribution profiles of total (HgT) and MeHg have been established for the solid phase of sediment cores collected in various near-shore environments chosen for their hypothetical various degrees of anthropization. In addition, dissolved MeHg was determined in sediment pore waters to test its mobility and potential availability for biota. Three...

Modeling trace metal accumulation in the mediterranean mussel, mytilus galloprovincialis ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio; Cossa, Daniel; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Bacher, Cedric; Andral, Bruno.
Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. In this purpose, modeling metal dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. It allows understanding the bioaccumulation process which results from the interactions between biological, chemical and environmental factors. To calibrate such a model, kinetic experiments on uptake and elimination were conducted on three Mediterranean sites chosen on the basis of their different nutritive and chemical characteristics.

In situ kinetics of mercury bioaccumulation in mytilus galloprovincialis estimated by transplantation experiments ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio; Cossa, Daniel; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Bacher, Cedric; Andral, Bruno.
Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. For this purpose, studying mercury dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. In situ experiments on uptake and elimination kinetics were conducted in three Mediterranean sites, chosen on the basis of their contamination levels. Mussels were transplanted from a clean area to a highly contaminated one and then transferred back to a clean site. This approach makes it possible to define bioaccumulation factors and uptake and elimination rates consistently with the real environmental conditions.

Methylmercury formation in the anoxic waters of the Petit-Saut reservoir (French Guiana) and its spreading in the adjacent Sinnamary river ArchiMer
Coquery, M; Cossa, Daniel; Azemard, S; Peretyazhko, T; Charlet, L.
The present work was carried out on the hydroelectric reservoir Petit-Saut on the Sinnamary river in French Guiana. Measurements were performed during the wet and dry seasons along a longitudinal gradient, from upstream of the reservoir in two inflow rivers, to the Sinnamary estuary downstream of the dam. Gold extraction has led to a marked increase in suspended matter and total mercury (HgT) in one of the rivers. Dissolved monomethylmercury (MMHg) measured in surface waters were similar for both rivers: 0.03-0.05 ng l(-1) (1.0-1.7% of the dissolved HgT). These results indicate similar methylation efficiency and/or transfer of MMHg into the dissolved fraction of the water column, independently of the amounts of inorganic mercury transported. Dissolved MMHg...

Cossa, Daniel; Abarnou, Alain; Andral, Bruno; Bougrier, Serge; Buestel, Dominique; Claisse, Didier; Hatt, Philippe-jacques; Stanisiere, Jean-yves.

Origin and Accumulation of Trace Elements in Sediments of the Northwestern Mediterranean Margin ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Buscail, R.; Puig, P.; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Radakovitch, Olivier; Jeanty, G.; Heussner, S..
Continental margins receive natural and anthropogenic trace elements (TEs) from direct atmospheric deposition of aerosols onto the sea surface and from advection of riverine suspended particles and/or resuspended sediments from the continental shelf/slope. When the margin is incised by submarine canyons, as for example in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea, most of these particles are preferentially transferred via these topographic features towards their final repositories in the abyssal plain. The Gulf of Lions (GoL) shelf receives the largest particulate riverine input to the Western Mediterranean, with its associated chemical contaminants originating from the industrialized and urbanized Rhone Valley. Sediments samples (grabs, cores and moored traps)...

Total mercury in the water column near the shelf edge of the European continental margin ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Cotte Krief, Marie-hélène; Mason, Robert P.; Bretaudeau-sanjuan, Jane.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the distribution and the relative importance of processes that affect mercury distribution in the water column at the shelf edge of the Celtic Sea, on the western European continental margin. The water column, down to 4500 m, was sampled during two cruises, one in winter 1994 and the other in June 1995, on eight stations. Total mercury concentrations ranged from 0.29 to 9.37 pM with the extreme values in the first 200 m. The highly variable concentrations in the surface layers are attributed to intense atmospheric-sea water exchange processes. The low concentrations encountered in the shelf water prelude any significant influence of continental waters in this area. In the mixed layer, biological uptake and...

Sources and exchanges of mercury in the waters of the Northwestern Mediterranean margin ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; De Madron, Xavier Durrieu; Schafer, Jorg; Guedron, Stephane; Marusczak, Nicolas; Castelle, Sabine; Naudin, Jean-jacques.
Ocean margins are focal regions in terms of mercury (Hg) exchanges between the continent and the open sea. The aim of this paper is to describe the distribution and partition of Hg between the gaseous, dissolved and particulate phases in the waters of the Northwestern Mediterranean (NWM) margin, in order to assess the Hg sources and exchanges within the continuum between the continental shelf (Gulf of Lions) and the open sea (Northern Gyre). Mean (± standard deviation) of total Hg species (HgT) concentrations in unfiltered water samples were 1.52 ± 1.00 pmol L-1 (n=36) in the inner shelf, 1.09 ± 0.15 pmol L-1 (n=30) along the slope, and 1.10 ± 0.13 pmol L-1 (n=99) in the Northern Gyre. The dissolved phase (<0.45µm) average concentrations were 0.80 ±...

The open sea as the main source of methylmercury in the water column of the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean margin) ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; De Madron, Xavier Durrieu; Schafer, Jorg; Lanceleur, Laurent; Guedron, Stephane; Buscail, Roselyne; Thomas, Bastien; Castelle, Sabine; Naudin, Jean-jacques.
Despite the ecologic and economical importance of coastal areas, the neurotoxic bioaccumulable monomethylmercury (MMHg) fluxes within the ocean margins and exchanges with the open sea remain unassessed. The aim of this paper is to address the questions of the abundance, distribution, production and exchanges of methylated mercury species (MeHgT), including MMHg and dimethylmercury (DMHg), in the waters, atmosphere and sediments of the Northwestern Mediterranean margin including the Rhône River delta, the continental shelf and its slope (Gulf of Lions) and the adjacent open sea (North Gyre). Concentrations of MeHgT ranged from <0.02 to 0.48 pmol L−1 with highest values associated with the oxygen-deficient zone of the open sea. The methylated mercury to...

Chronology and sources of trace elements accumulation in the Rhône pro-delta sediments (Northwestern Mediterranean) during the last 400years ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Fanget, Anne-sophie; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Bassetti, M-a; Buscail, R.; Dennielou, Bernard; Briggs, K.; Arnaud, M; Guedron, S.; Berne, Serge.
The Rhône pro-delta sediments receive the particulate inputs from the Rhône River, the largest freshwater discharge of the Western Mediterranean Sea. Trace element (TEs: Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentrations and stable Pb isotope ratios were determined along a 7.7-meter-long sediment core collected from the Rhône prodeltaic lobe, archiving the deposits of the last 400 years. Trace element mean concentrations during the pre-industrialized era (before 1850 AD) were no different from the average composition of Earth’s upper crust, except for Cr. Principal component analysis, performed on TEs and tracers, suggests three origins for TEs that we identified as (i) marine biogenic material (Ag, Cd), (ii) ultramafic rocks (Li, Cr, Ni), and (iii) other...

A Michaelis–Menten type equation for describing methylmercury dependence on inorganic mercury in aquatic sediments ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Garnier, Cedric; Buscail, Roselyne; Elbaz-poulichet, Francoise; Mikac, Nevenka; Patel-sorrentino, Nathalie; Tessier, Erwan; Rigaud, Sylvain; Lenoble, Veronique; Gobeil, Charles.
Methylation of mercury (Hg) is the crucial process that controls Hg biomagnification along the aquatic food chains. Aquatic sediments are of particular interest because they constitute an essential reservoir where inorganic divalent Hg (HgII) is methylated. Methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in sediments mainly result from the balance between methylation and demethylation reactions, two opposite natural processes primarily mediated by aquatic microorganisms. Thus, Hg availability and the activity of methylating microbial communities control the MeHg abundance in sediments. Consistently, some studies have reported a significant positive correlation between MeHg and HgII or total Hg (HgT), taken as a proxy for HgII, in aquatic sediments using...

Mercury in the Southern Ocean ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Heimbuerger, Lars-eric; Lannuzel, Delphine; Rintoul, Stephen R.; Butler, Edward C. V.; Bowie, Andrew R.; Averty, Bernard; Watson, Roslyn J.; Remenyi, Tomas.
We present here the first mercury speciation study in the water column of the Southern Ocean, using a high-resolution south-to-north section (27 stations from 65.50 degrees S to 44.00 degrees S) with up to 15 depths (0-4440 m) between Antarctica and Tasmania (Australia) along the 140 degrees E meridian. In addition, in order to explore the role of sea ice in Hg cycling, a study of mercury speciation in the "snow-sea ice-seawater" continuum was conducted at a coastal site, near the Australian Casey station (66.40 degrees S; 101.14 degrees E). In the open ocean waters, total Hg (Hg(T)) concentrations varied from 0.63 to 2.76 pmol L(-1) with "transient-type" vertical profiles and a latitudinal distribution suggesting an atmospheric mercury source south of the...

Sources, cycling and transfer of mercury in the Labrador Sea (Geotraces -Geovide cruise) ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Heimburger, L. E.; Sonke, J. E.; Planquette, H.; Lherminier, Pascale; Garcia-ibanez, Maria Isabel; Perez, Ff; Sarthou, G..
The Labrador Sea links the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans and constitutes one of the main entrances of atmospheric inputs into the Ocean's interior. We report here the first high-resolution Hg distribution pattern along a transect from Greenland to Labrador coasts sampled after the 2014 winter convection. Total Hg concentrations in unfiltered (HgTUNF) samples ranged from 0.25 pmol L− 1 to 0.67 pmol L− 1 averaging 0.44 ± 0.10 pmol L− 1 (n = 113, 1σ). Concentrations in filtered samples (HgTF, < 0.45 μm) represented from 62 to 92% of the HgTUNF and exhibited a similar distribution. High HgTUNF concentrations were found (i) in the waters of the Labrador Current, which receive desalted waters from the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, and (ii) in the waters...
